Here's the situation and the vital stats.

I have four PCs on my LAN: 1(XPsp3), 2(XPsp3), 3(Win7 Pro), 4(Win7 Home Prem.). #s 1, 2 & 3 can see everyone in Neighborhood, but #4 can only see itself and #3. #4 can ping everyone (by either IP address or name). It was weird when it couldn't browse itself through the network neighbourhood so I knew it was something to do with the network settings. Nearly reinstalled windows and you've saved me from that fate.

I changed the password back to blank and had to enable net user on that account and all seems fine again. Thanks!

When you say password need to by synchronised do you mean there could be a unique password on each computer on the network so long as both the guest and user account are the same or do you mean throughout the network they must be all blank or all the same? For windows XP home I mean.
Recently I connected to a windows 7 machine by enabling sharing and naming it into my workgroup. When connecting I was prompted for a password and used the main logon. That gave me that mad idea to add a password to one of my machines which I thought I'd be prompted for. Unless you are a p...LOL, Indie,

You got me there.

Unless you are a programmer, and you can reverse engineer all of the code that scares you, you really can't.

How can you be sure that any code is "properly written"?

My thought on that would be to use code that millions of other people use. Any product with any popularity is probably being carefully scrutinized by one watchdog agency or organisation. As long as you are not the CIA, or some major bank or other terrorist target, most likely you are as safe as anybody else using the same router, or software.

In reality, you can't be 100% sure that code in any electronic device is "properly written". Do you have a microwave oven in your home? Do you leave it connected to the mains, on a 7 x 24 basis? If the microcode in the circuitry on your microwave oven is not "properly written", the oven might turn on when you are not watching.

But you still (probably) have a microwave oven - and you have a computer, and a router.

If you have a computer - and you have a router - you have to place some trust in the people who wrote the code that runs on your computer, and in your router.

Whether it's code that runs the mouse pointer, that opens and closes ports on the router, or that lets you chat (audio / text / video) with your friends, you have to trust that code.

Life is full of risks.Nitecruzrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08069634565746003311noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3649034.post-72181721498582622932011-04-22T09:23:56.502-07:002011-04-22T09:23:56.502-07:00good one, it resolved my issue with msn.com which ...good one, it resolved my issue with msn.com which was loading slowly.Sachin TKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16451405021070798248noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3649034.post-75908151141438612452011-04-16T23:53:18.205-07:002011-04-16T23:53:18.205-07:00Chuck, you have not answered my question at all. The two computers can ping each other perfectly, share files and view each other on the network map. In the windows 9x series AD does not exists, only workgroups do. And workgroup networking being a peer to peer type of network there is no central authentication. That's why I don't get where the network password fits.
Do you have the answer?

Cheers,
GildasUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15323608347390589920noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3649034.post-2303806826399096822011-01-24T10:39:46.701-08:002011-01-24T10:39:46.701-08:00Thanks for the Kung Fu!
